Review: J Crew Jeweled-Collar Sweater

When I saw this sweater, I was super excited!  I loved the herringbone and the gorgeous jeweled collar.

It arrived today and I have to say that I'm disappointed.  The fit seems off...I'm typically a S in J Crew sweaters, but this one seems somewhat boxy and does nothing to flatter me.  I wonder if sizing down would help or if then perhaps, the arms may be too tight.

The sleeves, I suppose, are bracelet length.  You can see where they hit on my arm above.  The sweater is made of 50% alpaca and 50% wool, so it's a bit itchy.  I'm not super sensitive and if I loved it, I could deal with it...but for those "delicate flowers" out there, this one's probably not for you.

On the positive side, I love the neutral colors...they would be perfect for fall.  and the jeweled collar is gorgeous and adds some sparkle, making this a very unique sweater.  Nevertheless, for the $178 price tag, it would have to be love...and it wasn't.

Have you seen/tried this sweater?  If so, what are your thoughts?

  1. Hadn't seen it until your review. Bummer you were disappointed! Looks vintage-inspired and lovely, but you are right...if it is not love it should go back. Can I just say I am over J.Crew's bracelet sleeves? I find them to look awkward.

    1. I know, dangit, it had so much potential! Yeh, me either...I don't really care for the bracelet sleeves...and if I had liked the rest of the sweater, I probably would have ended up pushing the sleeves up to three-quarter length.

  2. I hadn't even seen this sweater yet - I adore all the details and it's got great potential, but I agree, for nearly $200, it's got too many flaws to keep. The jeweled collar though - adore!

    1. Yep, for that price, it had to be perfection! and unfortunately, aside from the lovely jeweled collar, perfection it wasn't! :o/

    1. Thanks Ina! I sure wish they'd used a different fabric and tailored the body just a bit more.

  7. I love the sweater, too, but you are right - it does nothing for you and you always look so smart in what you wear! I am a delicate flower like Ina - the alpaca would drive me mad!

    1. Thanks for the honest feedback...it fits kind of like a sack, and what girl needs that?! :oP
Definitely, if you're sensitive, this one's not for you.

  8. You know I love me some sparkles but for some reason, this top wasn't compelling to me. I think I'd prefer it as a tailored sleeveless shell. You can do better, especially for $178!

    1. It definitely needs to be more tailored...and as teeny-tiny as you are, even the xxs would swallow you whole.

  9. What a shame it doesn't fit, because it is certainly pretty. Not only can alpaca be itchy, it is really quite warm. Thank you for the review!

    1. Oh you're right...I hadn't even thought about the warmth factor. Nope this one's definitely not for me...I would burn up!

  10. I missed this from the other day! As you know, I got this sweater, too, and only have had a chance to try it on briefly. I think the one I tried was more fitted through the body than how it appears on you, but even I remember thinking I need to try it on again because something about the sides next to the bust area maybe was off? You might be able to size down, but it might make the sleeves too tight and the body too short. I'll try mine again and report back!

  11. I like the colors on you, but agree that it's just too itchy. Esp for the price, it should be perfect.

  12. I have this and love it. I bought a size smaller than the sizing chart suggests.
